4 Haunted U.S. Roads That Will Send a Chill Down Your Spine

Archer Avenue in Chicago, Illinois

Known by some as the most haunted place in Ohio, Dead Man’s Curve has a dark history going back to the 1800s. When it was originally constructed, the highway was designed to curve sharply at the top of a hill, which caused many horses and carriages to slip or roll over and fall down the hillside. Not long after the highway was straightened and reopened with four lanes in 1968, a vehicle carrying five teenagers collided at the intersection with another vehicle going nearly 100 miles per hour, and there was only one survivor. Since that day, it’s reported that over 70 people have been killed at the intersection.

Legend has it that the stretch of road is haunted by a faceless hitchhiker, who roams the area between 1:20 a.m. and 1:40 a.m., every night. He attempts to hitch a ride, sometimes appearing in the middle of the road where unsuspecting drivers run into him. Reportedly, he chases your car after you run through him!

Gravity Hill on Richfield Road in Richfield, North Carolina

For those who are brave enough to drive there after dark, Gravity Hill can be a truly terrifying place. According to local legends, a young mother and her child were driving one night when their car stalled. As the mother got out and attempted to push the car up the hill, a truck came over the hill, hitting and instantly killing both passengers instantly.

Locals say that if you put your car in neutral at the bottom of the hill, a ghostly presence will push it back up the hill, and if you put baby powder on the hood of your car, you will see handprints appear in it when you reach the top of the hill!

Route 2A in Aroostook County, Maine

Route 2A is known as a dangerous stretch of road for truckers, especially during the winter months when the sharp turns are covered in thick layers of ice and snow. In fact, the stretch of highway inspired the 1960s country song “A Tombstone Every Mile” by Dick Curless.

Many truckers have lost their lives while driving on the road, but it’s the ghost of several other individuals that make it infamous. Numerous travelers have seen a woman screaming that her husband is trapped in their vehicle, and begging them to stop and help. When they stop and try to get close to her, she vanishes. Other travelers claim to have seen the ghost of a little girl on the side of the road who was killed by a semi-truck many years before.
