Halloween Safety: Tips for a Spooky Good Time

Trick-or-treating and spooky parties are longstanding Halloween traditions. However, accidents and other incidents can dampen the spirits on this Eve. Here are some tips to keep your celebrations safe - from decorating to trick-or-treating.

Trick-or-Treating Precautions

The biggest risk during trick-or-treating is probably children being struck by vehicles. Children of all ages walk along dark streets at night. It can be difficult for even the most vigilant drivers to see everyone on the road, and many parents may not always be able to see their children from their vehicles.

There are several ways you can help keep your kids safer while they're going from house to house:

  • Chaperone younger kids as they trick-or-treat.
  • Use the sidewalks whenever possible.
  • Send children out in groups that stick together.
  • Choose high-visibility costumes that have lighter colors.
  • Put a glow stick somewhere on each costume or candy bag.
  • Go trick-or-treating in neighborhoods your children know.
  • Drive kids between driveways if trick-or-treating on busier streets.

Many parents also prefer to check the candy received, either while trick-or-treating or once home.

Protecting Your Home

Your house is also potentially at risk from burglars and vandals. Good exterior lighting, a security system, and having someone stay home can mitigate this.

Another risk is the potential for fire from Halloween decorations. Placing fabric or paper decorations too close to a heat source, overloading exterior electrical outlets, degraded wires on decorations, and placing candles near flammable materials are all potential fire hazards. Potential candle fires can start inside, or outside if left unattended in a paper bag.

Don't forget to ensure you have the right protection for your home by talking with your insurance agent. They can go over individual coverage and specific policies with you.
